A patrol car belonging to Mitchelstown gardai had its 4 tyres slashed. The incident occurred when they went to investigate a reported break-in and theft on James’ Street in the town and upon returning to their car some 15 minutes later, they came across the wanton act of vandalism. Taking ‘a dim view’ of the matter, it was estimated that it would cost ‘nearly £200 to replace the tyres’. They had no leads to either incident and were appealing to the public for their co-operation.

St Fanahan’s Holy Well committee were set to welcome thousands of pilgrims to Mitchelstown during the course of the lead up to the patron saint’s feast day on November 25th. For 9 days before the feast of St Fanahan, ‘people from North Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford would visit the well to take its waters’. Much work had been put in at the well grounds during the summer of 1993, which included tarring of the footpath at the well, river maintenance, hedge cutting and some tree planting. Old-style lanters would illuminate the 700 yard long tree lined path in the lead up to the feast day, with Rosary being recited at the well nightly.

Presentations to members of the clergy took place at a special night organised in Glanworth Community Hall. Former PP of Glanworth, Fr Pat O’Hanlon was welcomed back to the village and Seamus Kirby made a presentation to mark his retirement. Fr O’Hanlon said that he was very grateful for the presentation and for the ‘thoughtfulness of the people’, asking them to ‘remember him in their prayers’. While Seamus Browne, on behalf of parishioners, made a presentation to Fr Declan Hennessy, on his transfer from Glanworth parish. Fr Hennessy alos accepted a presentation on behalf of Fr Pat Lawton CC, who was also transferred from the parish, but was unable to attend on the night. Sean Pierce, on behalf of the GAA, presented Fr Hennessy with a crystal lamp in recognition of all his work with the association in the area.

Two brothers from Glenville, who were described to The Avondhu as ‘an institution in themselves’, were honoured at a special function in Kades Kounty. A group comprising of people from Glenville, Carrignavar, Glanmire, Rathcormac, Killavullen, Ballyhooly and Watergrasshill, gathered to pay tribute to Tadhg and John Cosgrove, who had run the local forge on Main Street, Glenville for nearly 50 years. While Tadhg retired in 1987, John closed the doors to the forge in October 1993 - the brothers took over the business started by their father Michael, in 1908. At the function, James Murphy from Kildinan commented that they were “known far and wide”, charged very little and “got the world of people out of trouble”. Award winning author, Alice Taylor presented the brothers with a pair of Reinhart bronze farrier statues, along with a cheque, which was a mark of appreciation from the organising committee.

In brief – Pipe laying work was to commence on the Mitchelstown sewerage scheme in November 1993. Work was to commence simultaneously in Church Street and on a surface water outfall through Sutton’s Yard, into the Gradogue river. Main contractor for the scheme was Paddy O’Brien Construction Ltd, Cahir, Co Tipperary, with mechanical and electrical contractor being Electrical & Pump Services Ltd, Quartertown, Mallow. Tallow entrepreneur Sean Tobin, MD of Goalpost Ireland, was set to address a major conference in Cork entitled ‘Innovative Marketing For Small Firms’.
