It's that time of year again when Ireland's celebration of youth eco-action opens for registration with young people from The Avondhu readership area encouraged to get their hands green and reap rewards for their environmental efforts.

Now in its 15th year, ECO-UNESCO's Young Environmentalist Awards is an initiative open to young people aged from 10 to 18 from across Ireland who can enter their solutions to a host of local and global environmental issues through their schools, youth and community organisations.

2013 LOCAL SUCCESS

Two local schools featured among the national finalists last year - Loreto Secondary School in Fermoy and Presentation Secondary School in Mitchelstown, from where the latter took home the Senior Energy Award for 2013.

A Young Environmentalist Awards' road show will hit Munster towns and villages from October 14th to 18th encouraging young people to start their own eco-action projects. Free training and advice will be provided to all registered groups to help turn their ideas into viable projects and that support will be ongoing for the duration of the competition.

Registration is open until November 29th and entrants will then have until February 2014 to complete their project in one of 10 categories including climate change, biodiversity, energy, waste, community development and art and design.

Teachers and youth leaders can register groups of two to 25 young people, by visiting www.ecounesco.ie or by contacting them on 01-6625491.
