Assurances have been given this week that the future of Tallow Post Office is safe. Waterford Labour TD Ciara Conway, confirmed that she spoke with Minister for Communication Alex White this week on the matter, and was given an assurance on the future of Tallow Post Office.

This follows recent concerns locally to the contrary.

“Tallow-based Labour councillor John Pratt was aware that there were some rumours doing the rounds to the effect that there was a question mark over the future of Tallow Post Office. I have spoken to the Minister for Communication, my colleague Alex White, on the issue this week.”

Speaking to The Avondhu, Cllr Pratt commented on the matter: “There was a fear here locally that changes in Fermoy could cause issues from a sorting point of view here in Tallow, but we’ve now been assured that it won’t have any affect on Tallow Post Office.

“We’re losing enough in rural areas as it is, so it’s important to ensure that the viability is okay going forward,” he said.

Deputy Conway this week also welcomed moves to protect the future of post offices with a new body - the Post Office Network Business Development Group, established by Minister’s Alex White and Ann Phelan in a bid to ensure the post office network is sustainable in the future.

Welcoming the new group, Deputy Conway said: “Post offices are the fabric of our towns and villages, but the ever-changing market place has caused challenges for postmasters. Here in Waterford we’re no strangers to the challenges. So the government has acted and the response has been to set up this group, which will be focusing on finding ways to ensure the viability of the network.

“It work will focus on identifying products and services that are suited to a modern post office service, and which meet the needs of the 1.7 million customers who use post offices across Ireland every week.”

The group is being chaired by well-known businessman Bobby Kerr and will report back to the Minister later in the year.

“Addressing the challenges facing rural post offices is a key priority for Labour in Government and this new body clearly shows that we’re committed to this. I have every faith that this group will be able to develop this strategy.

“I’m also pleased that representatives of the Irish Postmasters’ Union and An Post will be members of the group, as this will ensure a healthy divergence of opinion and viewpoints on this critical issue,” she added.
