An artist from Mitchelstown who recently presented his former school with a painting said that he hopes the piece will inspire students to reach for the stars and realise their dreams.

Thomas Murphy, who has been living in Cosenza Calabria in Italy for the past ten years, first discovered his love and passion for art in St Fanahan's College.

On a recent visit, Thomas came home for the first time in three years and following the success of his exhibition 'Out of Time' in Italy, he wanted to give something back to the school, which had nurtured and supported his love of art throughout his education.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Thomas explained that he works with complex design construction techniques and that the piece he presented to St Fanahan's is based on a Church window and is very complex in nature.

He said that he has never been afraid of complexity and likes to wow people with his work. He added that he chose to give the school such a complex piece so that students could be inspired to take their own work further and realise their dreams.

"I answered questions for the students to give them an insight into what it's like to pursue a dream. A lot of students would be on the verge of doing something great, but then decide that it is too hard or not feasible. I gave them a complex piece, so that they could aim for that."

Thomas is now planning another exhibition for Calabria in Italy this year, which is expected to be even bigger than his first one and could garner national media coverage.
