Araglin missionary Br Kevin, passes away in Ethiopia

Brother Kevin O'Mahoney, a man with strong links to the Araglin area who dedicated his life to working with the underprivileged in Ethiopia, passed away on 3rd January - he was 83. 
Born in Manchester, he spent his formative years with family members in Gortnaskehy, Araglin. He followed his older brother, Brian, into the missionaries and was assigned to Ethiopia in 1967. Outside of the 8 years he spent as Father Provincial in Templeogue, Dublin, he dedicated his life to assisting the people of Ethiopia where he was a popular and widely respected individual.

Brother Kevin's work was frequently carried out in difficult circumstances and during his long career, he survived two civil wars and three devastating famines. An accomplished writer, Brother Kevin was also an exceptional linguistic and spoke 7 languages in addition to several African dialects.

His funeral Mass took place in Adrigat Cathedral in Ethiopia - he is survived by nieces and nephews and has direct links with with the former O'Mahoney's Fox & Hounds Bar in Araglin and the Donegan family from Macroney, Kilworth.

Locally, parishioners will have a chance to pay their respects at a memorial service in Araglin Church on Wednesday, 14th January at 7.30pm - all welcome.
