New Cork County Councillor Deirdre O'Brien, with her father Ned O'Keeffe, husband Dominic, sons Conor and Cian and brother Deputy Kevin O'Keeffe, having been selected on Sunday night.

The O’Keeffe dynasty lives on in local politics, as Deirdre O’Brien is following in her father Ned O’Keeffe’s and brother Kevin’s footsteps having last weekend been elected into Cork County Council to fill the seat that was left vacant when Kevin was elected into Dail Eireann.

There were three candidates vying for the position – Deirdre O’Brien, TJ Rea and Liam McLoughlin. The convention was held on Sunday night and in the end, Deirdre won out with a vote count of 75, with TJ Rea behind her with 36 and Liam McLoughlin at 19.

The O’Keeffe family members were delighted with Deirdre’s success, as Deirdre told The Avondhu that they were all very proud and that they had rowed in behind her from the very beginning.
