FERMOY SOCCER CLUB

U17 LEAGUE

Buttevant 2 Fermoy 3

After the disappointment of defeat away to Avondale last Sunday, our U17s travelled to Buttevant on Saturday evening to play under the lights at their excellent facility.

Hoping to get back to winning ways Buttevant converted a penalty to put the hosts 1 up against the run of play. Our lads replied through a driven low effort from distance from Jack Tonks to make the score 1-1 at half-time.

The 2nd half continued to be a physical affair, the hosts using the long ball over the top which Shane Howard in particular in defence dealt with in commanding fashion .

Fermoy eventually took the lead for the 1st time midway through the half with Connor DeRoiste following up his own saved penalty attempt to make it 2-1. Buttevant then forced our lads back for a lengthy period and scored an equaliser following up a fine parried save from Dale Dawson to make it 2-2. With the game deep in injury time our lads pressed hard for a deserved winner, when Connor De Roiste received the ball on the edge of the box and turned to curl a beautiful goal into the top corner with the very last kick of the game – a brilliant way to win any game – the referee blowing the final whistle on kick-off. A fantastic battling 3 points for our lads.

Team: D Dawson, J Mehigan, S Howard, DJ Cahill, N. Hazlewood, J Murphy, J Tonks, (c), R Morrison, C DeRoiste, R Broderick and M Walsh. Sub: J Farrell.

U11 LEAGUE

Glounthane 2 Fermoy 7

Fermoy kept the pressure on the league leaders last Sunday with a solid 7-2 away win against Glounthane. Fermoy started the game very well on a poor surface and dominated from the first minute. Lee Walsh came close to opening the score after 10 minutes with a great strike from 20 yards only for a great save by the keeper. Lee made no mistake with his next effort, a great strike from 15 yards to put Fermoy 0-1 ahead.

Fermoy continued to dominate the game with some great work in Midfield by Roy Vitkevicus, Ryan O’Mahony and Lee Walsh. Fermoy added 2 more goals through Arron Swalbe and Ciaran Cloney before a breakaway goal from the homeside before the break to make it 1-3 at half-time.

Fermoy settled the quicker and scored 2 quick goals through Arron Swalbe and Brian Shanahan settled the game at 1-5.Fermoy’s defence of Adam Carolan, Darragh O’Mahony, Cian McGir and Rian O Murchu were dominant throughout ably assisted by sub Shawn Howard and reduced Glounthane to very few chances. With the game over as a contest we were able to make changes but our work rate and commitment never dropped.

Two late goals from Brian Shanahan and Lee Walsh made it 7 for Fermoy before a consolation goal for the home team finished the scoring. Another convincing win and great team performance. Well done boys.
