CAMOGIE

Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown camogie team put in a very performance in their most recent Cork colleges U16 blitz that was held in Charleville on Wednesday, 18th March.

Having being postponed the previous week, due to rain, conditions were excellent as seven schools from Cork and Limerick travelled to North Cork in what proved to be a very good day out for all teams. Having had some disappointing results in Clonakilty a few weeks ago, the Pres girls were determined to put in a better performance this time around.

Pres found themselves in a group with Gaelcoláiste Luimní, Scoil Pól, Kilfinane and Coláiste Muire, Cobh. The other group contained Pres Ballyphehane, Coachford Community College and Coláiste Ciarán, Croom. The top team from each group would get to the final in what was a very competitive blitz overall.

Pres Mitchelstown 3-5 Scoil Pól, Kilfinane 0-2

Pres’s first game took place against Scoil Pól from Kilfinane and a quick start saw Pres lead from the front. Goals from Shona Lang and some good free taking from Sally McCarthy gave Pres a good platform to build on. They continued to outplay their opponents and got their day off to a good start, winning comfortably in the end.

Pres Mitchelstown 0-0 Coláiste Muire, Cobh 1-3

The second game proved to be the toughest and most decisive game as Pres came up short against a strong side from Cobh. Pres competed very well for a lot of the game and trailed by 0-2 to 0-0 at half-time in a game where scores were very hard to come by, and tackling was the stand out skill in the game.

Pres threw caution to the wind in the second-half and gave their best attempt to win the game. Again scores were earned by any side and as Pres pushed forward, they were left open at the back as Cobh scored a late goal followed by a point to put the game to bed. This loss made it hard for Pres to make the final but it was a very spirited display and they were unlucky just to fall a little bit short against tough opposition.

Pres Mitchelstown 2-4 Gaelcoláiste Luimní 0-3

There was one final group game for Pres who still had an outside chance of qualifying for the final but needed other results to go in their favour. They faced Gaelcoláiste Luimní who had also won one and lost one of their first two games.

A good start was key again as Pres put scores on the board to give a bit of a cushion that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. They led 1-2 to 0-0 at half-time but needed to push on the in the second-half as their opponents improved as the game progressed.

But Pres finished strongly and ran out winners on a score of 2-4 to 0-3. Unfortunately, this was not enough to qualify for the final as Cobh topped the group with three wins out of three.

Overall, it was a very good day out for the Pres camogie team. It was commented by the blitz organisers how much of an improvement the girls have made since the start of the year. Two wins out of three was a good showing and now the girls will be looking to progress again.

So, while there was no trophy to show for the day, it was still a very successful day out that was enjoyed by all.

TWO PROMISING PRESENTATION BASKETBALL TEAMS

Last week was a disappointing week for both Presentation basketball teams as they were knocked out of the Cork league in two exciting quarter-final games.

Our 2nd year team played against Colaiste Gobnatan from Ballyvourney on Wednesday 11th and lost by a narrow margin of just two baskets. The match was tight throughout and resulted in an exciting fourth quarter.

Our 1st year team played their game on Thursday 12th against St Al's from Carrigtwohill. St Al's soon emerged as the more experienced team and gained a comfortable lead in the first quarter which they retained throughout.

Reflecting over the games, both teams agree that they have learned a huge amount from both their victories and losses in this league and are already looking forward to next years league. They have improved on every aspect of their game since September and are fully aware of how important it is to attend training and get used to playing as a team.

Coaches, Noreen Piggott and Ms Maher, won't be giving them too much time to relax however and all players are back training this week in preparation for the blitzes and challenge matches that are being organised for the coming weeks.
