On July 22, Mitchelstown’s Niamh Waldron, a past pupil of Presentation Secondary School and recent graduate of Mary Immaculate College, will be travelling to Uganda for three weeks of voluntary work.
She spoke to The Avondhu about her motivation for travelling and how she is hoping to raise €2,000 for the charity she will be travelling with, through a series of fundraising events.
“Nurture Africa is an Irish charity which provides healthcare and education services to Ugandan HIV/AIDS infected and affected orphans and vulnerable children, as well as their HIV+ parents/guardians. Due to the AIDS epidemic in Uganda, there are more than 2 million orphans and 110,000 HIV infected children. Over 80% of children born with HIV will die before their 5th birthday because they lack access to the standard medical care that would enable them to lead normal, healthy lives," Niamh told The Avondhu.
"Nurture Africa runs a specialist paediatric health centre and provides the most vulnerable children in Uganda with lifesaving treatment, education and the hope of a better future. While in Uganda, I will be working in the town of Nansana, teaching in the local school each day, helping out in the health centre and working on community outreach projects. As part of the programme, volunteers are required to raise a minimum of €2,000 for Nurture Africa. I am covering all personal costs of the trip myself, including flights, vaccinations and accommodation."
FUNDRAISING EVENTS
Niamh is encouraging people to come out in support of upcoming fundraising events, saying: "All funds raised go directly towards providing healthcare and education services to vulnerable children and their families in Uganda. On Friday, 5th June I will be hosting a table quiz in The Yard Bar (Walsh’s Bar), Mitchelstown at 9pm in order to raise funds for Nurture Africa. The format will be teams of 4 people at €10 per person. There will be plenty of prizes and a raffle on the night, so please come along and support this worthy cause, a great night is guaranteed!"
"I will also be holding a bag-packing day in Reidy’s SuperValu on Saturday, 13th June to raise much needed funds for this charity, all support is greatly appreciated!,” she concluded. We wish her the best of luck on her travels.
