Bon Secours Hospital Cork is marking the success of an innovative 6 week outpatient programme which helps cardiac patients make a full recovery after a heart attack or cardiac surgery. Patients from the Munster region reunited with staff of the Bon Secours Hospital to celebrate the anniversary of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme. Among them were 3 former Lord Mayors of Cork Dan Wallace, Tim Falvey and Toddy O’Sullivan, who recently participated in the programme.

Former Lord Mayor Dan Wallace said “This programme was a life saver for me. After a triple bypass in 1987 and a second one in 2011 this programme has helped me get my confidence back and encouraged me to walk every day. We are the “lucky ones” as we get to attend this programme”.

Approximately 10,000 people die each year from Cardiovascular disease (CVD) including coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and other circulatory diseases. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at the Bon Secours Cork is aimed at helping patients recover from cardiac surgery, heart attack, angioplasty and any cardiac event.

According to Dr. Kenny, Consultant Cardiologist and the Clinical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation service at the Bon Secours Hospital Cork - “We know from scientific studies that exercise based cardiac rehabilitation reduces mortality by up to 26%, improving symptoms of angina and shortness of breath. It also reduces blood cholesterol levels and improves overall functional capacity. As clinicians, our job is to focus on advising patients how to follow a healthy lifestyle once they leave hospital. A healthy eating plan and sensible exercise regime plays a huge part in achieving this goal”, continued Dr. Kenny.

Cardiac Rehabilitation brings together a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team who can best advise on recovery from a cardiac episode.

The Bon Secours Hospital Cork offers a comprehensive cardiology service. The cardiology service within the department is a modern, state-of-the-art facility. It has a dedicated cardiology department, which provides a full range of cardiac diagnostic investigation and interventional procedures for patients with heart disease.
