St Fanahan’s College failed in their bid to win their first county senior football final in ten years following a highly contested final held in Fermoy on March 13th. St Fanahans had impressive wins over Kanturk and Ballingeary to book their place in the final with preparations having been excellent since the start of the year with team trainers Mr Butler and Mr Walsh coaching the team since September

As in similar rounds St Fanahans were slow to start and Coláiste Daibhéid physically dominated exchanges in the first ten minutes. Prior to the final injuries to key players including Phillip English hampered the usual rock solid Fanahans defence and Colaiste Dhaibheid exploited this weakness.

The St Fanahans fullback line of Killian Finn, James Hackett and Anthony Crowley were stretched to the limit and Coláiste Daibhéid opened a three points to no score after 5 minutes. Fanahans settled and Jack Norris and Chris Noonan linked well to open proceedings for Fanahans, however, Colaiste Dhaibheid won the resulting kick out and worked the ball up the field to score a pivotal goal.

This took the wind out of the Fanahans lads and despite their best effort they trailed 1-08 to 0-03 at half-time.

St Fanahans started the second half with several positional changes. Dylan Farrelly moving to centre back along with Killian Finn mowing to halfback, tightened the Fanahans defence and provided a platform to drive the ball forward. Jack Norris acting as a link between midfield and half forward brought the rest of the St Fanahan’s attackers into the game which culminated in Chris Noonan carving up the Coláiste Daibhéid’s defence to score a goal after 5 minutes leaving the score at 1-05 to 1-10.

Chris Noonan moved to centre forward and came into the game scoring two points leaving only 3 points between the teams with ten minutes to go. The St Fanahan’s lads desperately tried to get another goal to balance proceedings but injuries to Killian Finn, John O’Grady and Jack O’Donovan curtailed Fanahan’s progress with their hearts finally broken with three minutes to play as a loose ball in midfield was well won and led to the decisive final point for Coláiste Daibhéid.

The St Fanahan’s lads should be extremely proud of their Gaelic football year and the school wishes our 6th year players all the best in their future sporting endeavours.
