As parents and future students marvelled at the beautiful creations being hand crafted in the woodwork room as well as the wonderful facilities in CBS Secondary School, Mitchelstown, it was clear that their open night was a big hit.

The open night drew people from not only the town as well as Fermoy and surrounds, but also people from South Tipperary near Ballyporeen, Cahir and Clogheen.

ENCOURAGEMENT

First year student Matthew Dawson Furey spoke about how daunting going to secondary school from primary school can be, as he came from a very small school and even the volume of people in the school in his first few days was a little much. But, he said that the school is welcoming and with the buddy system, first years have someone to turn to for guidance and advice.

Senior student James Meaney also spoke about how the school fosters and supports every aspect of a student's potential and how the school encourages each student to strive for their personal best. He also spoke about how the different events in the school and extracurricular activities encourage friendships among the students, so while they may have enter without knowing many familiar faces, they will leave with a whole network of friends around them.

ROUNDED DEVELOPMENT

Principal, John Desmond spoke about how the central theme on which the school operates is that of respect and that CBS is about both teaching and learning. Speaking about the excellent results from the students, he said that of the class of 2012, 51 students left the CBS, 47 of those did the Leaving Certificate exam, while four did the Leaving Certificate Applied exam and two students got 600 or more points.

He said that it is important to develop all aspects of a student's life and not just to focus on academic achievements, speaking about the sports available and other activities such as debating, public speaking, quizzes, projects, competitions, days trips and school tours.

"In addition to academic pursuits, a whole range of extracurricular activities are offered at CBS to ensure the holistic development of our students."
