The efforts of the Green Schools Committee and student body at Mitchelstown CBS Secondary School were recognised recently by An Taisce, as the school was awarded its first green flag.

The school will hold a formal award ceremony in May and Transition Year student and member of the Green Schools Committee, Declan Cahill explained that the committee consists of the Transition Year class along with Ms Tangney and Joe Crowley.

“Throughout this school year, we have been working on making the school more environmentally friendly and to improve the attitude of students to the environment. We monitored waste and litter in our school and surveyed the students. We compiled our results to display on our green schools notice board and in our canteen, we have encouraged people to make sure to use the correct bins and to reduce littering and this is all part of our action plan.

“On February 4, we were visited by one of the green schools inspectors to decide whether or not our school was eligible to receive the green flag. One week later, we had received the news that our school was successful. It is a great achievement for the school and I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to getting this award. We will receive the flag during an award ceremony in May,” Declan explained.
