Still relevant, still active and still going strong after 50 years is no small achievement. This significant milestone was passed by members of Fermoy ICA last week and it was fitting that they marked the occasion.

The celebrations took place last Friday morning with Mass being followed by a reception/craft fair in the grounds of St. Patrick's Community Hospital, Fermoy. Again, this setting was significant as Fermoy ICA have been very good to the hospital over the years. Volunteers visit patients at regular intervals and every year the Fermoy guild arrange for gifts to be presented to those who spend Christmas in Fermoy hospital.

There was a fine crowd in attendance with representatives from neighbouring guilds out in force. Everyone was treated to tea and cakes and there was also a raffle. Following formalities, members past and present cut a cake especially created for the event.

LITTLE KEVIN

While other ICA branches in the The Avondhu catchment have fizzled out for a variety of reasons, the women in Fermoy are extremely committed to their guild and continue to involve themselves in a range of practical activities. This is reflected in their current 'Easter Chick' campaign, where ICA members have knitted hundreds of Easter chicks and placed a Cadbury Cream Egg inside - this is a great money spinner for cancer research and extremely popular with the public.

Another factor cited for the demise of other ICA groups is age profile, but this has never bothered the 'sisters' in Fermoy, indeed they argue that their members are now among some of the most experienced and wisest in the country. With half a century of ICA activism under their belts, it's upward and onward for the forever young ladies of Fermoy ICA.
