Mercifully the bitter cold snap that gripped the country during the early Spring months is behind us and presently conditions are conducive to growth. This is especially good news for the FETAC level 5 students who have spent many hours in the grounds of St. Patrick's Community Hospital, Fermoy, enhancing its surroundings.

As a result of their endeavours, the hospital has new flowerbeds, a fully operational poly tunnel and a herb garden, in addition to some attractive ornaments which have been remarked upon very favourably by visitors and residents of the hospital. The Avondhu was invited to see the students' handiwork last week and one could only be impressed by the work ethic and dedication of the 17 strong group who are tutored by Niall Ó Liathain and Selvi Iyilikci.

The course in question is the County Cork VEC Horticulture Programme which is geared towards those seeking to achieve a qualification in horticulture or related areas.

According to BTEI co-ordinator, Brendan Glynn, participants have benefited enormously from the mainly hands-on programme, but which also incorporates class work. The programme was also enthusiastically embraced by the VEC's Geraldine Canning. This very worthwhile project was also supported by local benefactor, Dr. Tomas Cavanagh.
