Fermoy man, Jim Owers, was shocked this week to discover the carcases of at least four calves dumped quite close to a main road on Coillte property.

"To the left as I entered the forest, and down a slight slope and just barely out of sight from the roadway, a deplorable sight presented before me. At least four fresian calf carcases had been dumped within 6 meters of the main road. Two carcases are somewhat intact and others are just skeletal remains," Jim said, adding that rodents were aplenty and scurried as he approached to photograph the scene.

"The attached photographs do not do justice to the scene. In this day and age, surely this practice ought to be the grounds for prosecution? The risk to public health, to waterways and to our environment in general must be considered here. Foxes, crows, rodents, flies and other scavengers frequent a site like this and the risk of disease being spread as a result, surely must pose concern for all?" he asks.
