Last year close to 3,500 people participated in the nine events in the Ballyhoura Active Series which took place during the summer and autumn months. This year it is hoped that numbers will increase significantly given the success of the series in recent years.
The series of road races and walks are specifically targeted at increasing participation and physical activity in the Ballyhoura Region in partnership with the local athletic clubs and other groups while, at the same time, hoping that the events will be a positive social occasion for local communities. Together they increase the level of publicity for each event and give all the events a collective boost.
This year there will be two parts to the series with 7 races in Cork and 7 races in Limerick with 14 races spread across the five months from May to September. The first event is a 5km race being held in the scenic surroundings of Doneraile Park which takes place on May 31st at 8pm.
ALL AGES AND ABILITIES
This series is a great way for anyone who wants to try running or walking an event for the first time to get a taste for the sport and what’s involved. It is also a great way to meet new people and become involved with your local athletic club. All ages and abilities are catered for in these events.
The race in Doneraile Park is named the ‘Dan Byrne Memorial 5km’ by Mallow AC in memory of one of their members who passed away. Entry fee for this race is only €5 and all proceeds will be donated to charity. It is recommended that people arrive early, at least an hour before the event starts to get parking, which will be outside the entrance to the park, and to get entered.
