The two islands on the O'Neill Crowley Quay side of the Blackwater river in Fermoy are to be removed, members of the Town Council were told at their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening.

Town Clerk Pauline Moriarty informed members that she had investigated two possible options for the work. While they were going to wait until the flood relief works were finished to remove the islands a window of opportunity had opened for them in the form of the current temporary fish pass works. It would mean though that they'd have to get the work done by the end of September.

TWO OPTIONS

The first, less comprehensive option was priced at €5,000 while the second more thorough option to remove all the gravel and other material and have it properly disposed of, would cost €15,000. She asked the councillors to choose which option to go with and also to approve the cost from their weir works allocation. It was the only relevant capital code that funding for the works could be taken from, she informed them.

Councillor Michael Hanley asked if they could afford to take it from the weir fund and he was told that they could, the town clerk advising that they had applied for a grant of €50,000 for a permanent bypass channel from the Department of Fisheries, who have confirmed they will consider the request.

Cllr. Hanley was in favour of the works being done. It was "reprehensible, unacceptable and a total disgrace" that the islands hadn't been removed earlier, he said. Earlier this year he said that the islands were taking over the river.

Cllr. John Murphy proposed accepting the second option and funding it from the weir funding allocation and it was seconded by Cllr. Noel Barnes.
