Members of St Patrick's Community Hospital, Fermoy Fundraising Association celebrated their 30th anniversary in some style last Tuesday night.

Formalities got underway in the hospital chapel where Fr PJ O'Driscoll and Revd Eileen Cremin attended. Special guests included the mayoress of Fermoy Town Council, Cllr Olive Corcoran, historian Christy Roche and singers from the Bel Canto Choir.

Following prayers, guests moved across to the hospital's reception area where they were welcomed and addressed by fundraising chairman, Tom Higgins. Tom spoke about the association's many fundraising projects, the sense of camaraderie it fostered and the satisfaction derived from assisting a hospital that was so close to the hearts of local people. The association's ability to raise very substantial funding, allied to its lobbying role, proved vital in convincing previous governments to invest considerably in St Patrick's.

Christy Roche chronicled the evolution of medical care in Fermoy from oppressive workhouses and fever hospitals to the modern facility we have today.

Mayoress Corcoran identified local support as being critical to the hospital's development.

"Being from Fermoy I understand completely what St Patrick's Community Hospital means to the town and surrounding areas. People are understandably and justifiably proud of what they have and their continued support of fundraising projects initiated by the association, illustrates their commitment to its wellbeing," she said.

Director of Care, Annette Clancy said the excellent working relationship between the hospital and the fundraising association had been vital. "There was mutual respect and the primary concern of both parties was the care and welfare of residents," she remarked.

Cllr Tadhg O'Donovan who is the association's PRO said it was right to mark such a significant milestone and he availed of the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of past and deceased members of the association.

Rounding up proceedings, chairman Tom Higgins did observe that the 23% VAT rate on items secured by the association was hard to swallow and he hoped that there might yet be a Government rethink on this matter. He also got in a mention for a fundraising concert by Louise Morrissey which takes place in Corrin Event Centre on 6th December this year.

There was a rousing end to proceedings when long time association supporter, Vera Noonan sang the classic 'My Home In Fermoy'. Following a cake cutting ceremony by association members, those present retired for refreshments prepared and served by staff from Herlihy's Centra, Fermoy.
