The consequences on local business in Fermoy of the abolition of the town council next year will be discussed at the AGM of the town's Business Action Group next Monday night.
"Rates are a big concern. Fermoy currently has the second lowest town rates base in the county," FBAG chairman Noel McCarthy said this week. "We know that businesses who pay rates to Cork County Council pay substantially more than adjacent businesses who pay theirs to Fermoy Town Council, so naturally people are concerned," he pointed out.
Another issue due to be discussed is parking. Once the town council is abolished, parking becomes the responsibility of Cork County Council and it's the same with other services, such as street sweeping.
"Funding for the latter will come from the county council's central budget," the chairman, who is also a county councillor, pointed out.
"These are issues of concern for every business owner in the town. For that reason we are appealing to local business people to attend our AGM on Monday next. We'd ask them, if they cannot attend themselves, to send a representative," he urged.
The meeting will take place at 6.15pm in The Torten restaurant on Patrick Street.
