It was agreed to seek a meeting within the next fortnight with the flood relief works senior engineer, Ger Barry when Fermoy Town Council members discussed the scheme at their recent meeting.

He was unable to attend to give them an update. Cllr. John Murphy was concerned about the MacCurtain Street to Barnane Walk laneway, saying works on the wall there have been held up. It is important, he said, that the works be finished before Christmas as there is a lot going on in the rowing club and youth centre over that period.

Cllr Michael Hanley mentioned Waterloo Lane, saying the Office of Public Works (OPW) were going to put floodlights in there. Cllr Murphy supported his proposal that they be asked to go ahead with that. Cllr Noel McCarthy agreed. He complimented the OPW and Lagan, saying they'd made a lot of progress generally.

CRUCIAL PERIOD

It was Cllr Tadhg O'Donovan however who said he'd like them to meet with the project's senior engineer within the next two weeks, given that there is so much going on with the works at present. Whether they met him through the town council or the traffic management sub-committee, it was important that they did. Members all agreed.

Cllr Murphy pointed out that there are 20 plus workers on site at Ashe Quay at present. Mayor Olive Corcoran said she'd like to see the works there finished up as soon as possible. Cllr Seamus Coleman reiterated his belief that works shouldn't be started in a second place until they are completed at the first site. "We were assured one would be finished before other's opened," he pointed out.

Regarding the Ashe Quay works, he reminded people that The Grand Hotel is going to be busy shortly with Christmas parties.

Town Clerk Pauline Moriarty told them they were aiming to have no works going on in Ashe Quay in December. At present, Lagan personnel are working in the evenings to get works finished. "I don't think you need to be concerned," she assured them.

ONGOING SUPPORT NECESSARY

Cllr Michael Hanley said however that it is the business people themselves who are responsible for delays at Ashe Quay to a certain extent. The senior engineer, Ger Barry, is playing "a masterful role in trying to accommodate business owners," he asserted.

Cllr Noel McCarthy said the message must be to keep supporting businesses along Ashe Quay.
