There was a stern warning issued by gardai to parents of schoolgoing children at two Fermoy schools. Irresponsible parking outside both Gaelscoil de hIde and Bishop Murphy NS had seen several “near misses” when parents were dropping off and collecting children.
This was in spite of many verbal and written warnings having been issued over parking, on what was a busy main road. Parents were asked to “desist from double parking as it could result in a terrible tragedy”.
It was awards time in Lismore, with the various category winners in the local Tidy Towns being honoured. Best community effort went to Park’s Road, while Mrs Mary O’Farrell’s window boxes caught the judges’ eyes. Best all-round floral display went to Mrs Ita McNamara. Bric-A-Brac, located in Main Street, received an award for best new shop front.
County Waterford engineer, John O’Flynn and Jack Walsh, representing South East Regional Tourism, congratulated those involved on their efforts. While Rose O’Dowd, chairperson of the local Tidy Towns committee, said the committee were already focussing on the 1993 competition and were set to review a five year plan, drawn up by consultant Ann O’Leary.
An attendance of close on 200 were present in The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown, where 17 men and women were honoured for sporting and community endeavour, at the 4th annual Sports & Community Awards presentation – hosted by Mitchelstown Skittles Club and sponsored by Mitchelstown Credit Union. MC on the night was Liam White, while guests of honour included Cork hurling trainer, Gerald McCarthy and upcoming Cork hurling star, Brian Corcoran.

The concern of members of the public in Ballyhooly, led to the launch of a local Community Alert group in the local hall. An enthusiastic turnout was in attendance to hear area crime prevention officer, Sgt Michael Cloney and Sgt Larry Condren, Castletownroche, outline the importance of the new measures in the community.
Co-ordinators in each townland would have specific responsibility for helping gardai protect society’s most vulnerable, namely the elderly and the isolated. Chairman of the newly formed group was Tim O’Mahony. Castletownroche had earlier in the year launched their own Community Watch scheme, while Killavullen were also set to launch a similar scheme.
O’Sullivan Meats, Brian Boru Square, Fermoy advertised their promise of low lamb prices, guaranteeing 5p per lb under any price offered by their competitors. Some in-store prices included legs of lamb £1.49, centre loin chops £1.69, shoulders of lamb £0.79 each; while a ‘£9.99 Super Special’ would secure a 4lb chicken, 4 large lamb chops, 4 loin pork chops, 1 dozen eggs, 1lb sausages, 1lb rashers, 1lb liver and either a joint of bacon or 1lb mince – now that was value!
Araglin Celtic Soccer Club secured a 1-0 away victory over Piltown. With gale force winds to contend with and a strong defensive showing in the first half, where the home side had the wind at their backs, some fine goalkeeping by Phil Cohen saw the sides scoreless at the interval.
Araglin scored the only goal 15 minutes into the second half, when Steve Byrne slotted home following a Paul Neligan pass from midfield. Team: P Cohen, P Colbert, W Allen, E McGrath, L Magner, D Gill, T White, D Gleeson, John Kenneally, S Byrne, G McCarthy. Subs: P Neligan for D Gill, K Barry for D Gleeson.
