While crowds may have been down somewhat on previous years at the 13th annual One Act Drama Festival in Castlelyons, those who did attend last Friday and Saturday night's performances were treated to some excellent acting.
Organised by the Barrymore Players' group and granted aided by Cork County Council, this competition is a recognised platform for aspiring young talent.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mayor of County Cork, Cllr Noel O'Connor, congratulated the winners as well as complimenting everyone associated with the festival, especially James Ronayne (chairman), Grainne Barry (secretary), Ann Hegarty (PRO), James Parker (treasurer) and festival director, Martha Riordan. Locally produced plays were the heartbeat of small towns and villages, he said.
Others acknowledged on the night included Mary Murphy, Bridie Milward, Eileen O'Doherty, Denis James and Daniel Crowley along with members of Castlelyons Community Council.
Festival adjudicator was Geoff Goold and the following were the results. Best youth award (Doireann Gough, Conna Dramatic Society); best first time producer (Brendan Hurley, Conna Dramatic Society); best first time stage performance (Mary O'Connor, Conna Dramatic Society); best set (Nine, Coachford Players); best producer (Anthony Greene, Coachford Players); best supporting actress (Ellen Quirke, Take 5); best supporting actor (Andrew England, Conna Dramatic Society); best actress (Helen Bennett, Conna Dramatic Society); best actor (Ronan Bennett, Conna Dramatic Society); best circuit actor (Kris Cowming, Take 5); best circuit actress (Diane Searls, Coachford Players); golden moment of theatre (Take 5); Donal Crowley Perpetual Cup (Nine, Coachford Players) and Billy Leahy Perpetual Cup ('Little Box Of Oblivion', Conna Dramatic Society).
