It's that time of year again and as Christmas approaches, many of the senior citizens are looking forward to the social highlight of their year with the annual senior citizen's Christmas party in Mitchelstown.

Organised by the Friends of Tearmonn Ui Chaoimh with the help of the senior citizens and sponsored by Hodgins Sausages and Reidy's SuperValu, the party is now in its eighth year and is going from strength to strength.

It will take place in The Firgrove Hotel on Sunday, December 8 at 1pm and invitations have already been circulated for this popular ticket-only event.

Delia Tobin of the Friends of Tearmonn Ui Chaoimh said that this is always a great day out for people in the area and it is something that people really look forward to in the lead up to Christmas.

"The Friends of Tearmonn Ui Chaoimh do a great deal putting it all together, but we have to thank the seniors themselves for all of their help. They do 75% of the work getting the tickets out to people and it is always a true pleasure to work with them.

"We are looking forward to a great day and as usual, all of our friends will be there to help make it festive," Delia told The Avondhu.

Speaking to The Avondhu, Manager of Reidy's SuperValu in Mitchelstown, Jason O'Connor said that they are delighted to be sponsoring this Christmas party again, as it is a great way to mix with customers in a social setting and also to contribute something to the community before Christmas.

He added that this is the highlight of Alan Reidy's year every year and that it means an awful lot to him. Alan has unfortunately been off sick for a number of months, but Jason said that Alan has made it a personal goal to try to be well enough to make an appearance at this year's Christmas party.

Mervin Hodgins of Hodgins Sausages told The Avondhu that sponsoring this party is their way of giving something back to their customers and saying thank you for all of their support.

He said that there is a real feel good factor to the party and it is something that the guests really look forward to, as some of them might only see each other once a year at the Christmas party.

"There is huge community spirit involved in this event and with all of the people who help out, it's a real team effort and there is a huge voluntary contribution, even with the students from the CBS Primary School coming along to sing carols," Mervin said.
