Feast of film served up at Fermoy Film Festival
Fermoy woman Helena Reilly is putting the finishing touches to her short film 'After', which she plans to submit to film festivals for next year.
"We have high hopes for it," Helena told The Avondhu this week. She says she's learned much about film-making during the process. "Making a film is a collaborative project and I worked with a fantastic bunch of people and I'd like to say a huge thank you to my family and the cast and crew who worked so hard, and to those who provided funding to make it all possible."
Helena, from Coolnakilla, did a degree in drama and theatre studies with music at UCC after completing her secondary school education at Loreto Secondary School.
Her film, set in a house in the Burncourt area, is the story of two sisters, one working, one in college, whose father has passed away. Both sisters are stuck in their grief. The older sister, Sandra, as the more pragmatic of the two, instigates a reconnection with her sister, Leanne. Helena says it's about loss and bereavement and is told from a younger and lighter perspective. She played the part of Sandra.
The short film will have a private screening in the Camden Palace Hotel in Cork on December 17th.
Helena hasn't been neglecting the musical side of her career either. With the film almost complete, she's currently working on a music theatre piece which she hopes will be in development in January at the Triskel Development Centre off Grand Parade in Cork.
"I'm working on composing music, some of which is available on YouTube as well as developing different projects in film and theatre," she outlined. Helena hopes to continue working in film, theatre and music and is keeping her fingers crossed that 'After' will help establish her as an actor, writer and producer.
