U16B East Cork League football final - Saturday, November 30 - Rathcormac:
Bride Rovers 1-13 Aghada 1-10
The very last match for the club in 2013 ended in great celebrations when our U16 footballers won the East Cork League final against Aghada at our own pitch last Saturday afternoon.
This age group has competed against some very strong sides over the years and have not enjoyed much luck in finals so it was very pleasing to see them get their hands on a trophy at last. Aghada recently won the County U16 B championship title after tough encounters with Boherbue and Douglas so we were under no illusions that we went into this final very much as underdogs.
We started well, making good use of our possession and took most of our chances in the first half including a goal from Meg Kelliher just before half-time which gave us a lead of 1-8 to 1-4 at the break. We continued to play well in the second half but missed a couple of good goal chances to kill off the game and Aghada pressed hard to try to get back on terms.
Our backs worked tirelessly though and limited Aghada to points in the second half while goalkeeper Madison Parle was superb on the occasions when they did break through. Aghada closed to within 3 points at the final whistle but we were not to be denied on the day.
All-Ireland winning footballer and manager, Conor Counihan, a famous name synonymous with Aghada football, presented the trophy to our captain Karen Sheehan who was delighted to accept it on behalf of the panel. Well done to all the players and mentors John O’Dowd, Jim Sheehan and Catherine Murphy. It was great to finish the playing year on a very positive note and we now look forward to 2014 with confidence.
Match panel: Madison Parle, Sarah O’Flynn, Aine Cashman, Grainne Noonan, Aoife O’Riordan, Laura Quirke , Jessica Howard, Emma Roche (0-1), Grace Culloty (0-8), Karen Sheehan, Meg Kelliher (1-0), Elaine Culloty (0-3), Laura Pratt, Aoife Deasy, Niamh Murphy, Shauna O’Connell, Kate Cody, Emma Hazelwood, Maria O’Sullivan, Emma Barry, Aisling Finnegan and Katie Quirke (0-1).
