Local doctor Noelle Quann has been shortlisted as one of 30 volunteers for the Volunteer Ireland Awards 2013 for her work with the Lismore Community First Response Programme which she co-founded. Dr Quann works at the Family First Medical Practice in MacCurtain Street, Fermoy.

She was nominated in the community category for her involvement with the First Response Programme, which recruits volunteers from the local community to train as Community First Responders. The volunteers are contacted by ambulance control to attend medical emergencies in their local area. A Community First Responder will be able to reach the patient within a few minutes to provide first aid, perform CPR and use a defibrillator where necessary, helping to start and maintain the chain of survival during the crucial early stages, until a fully equipped ambulance arrives.

Dr Quann has contributed a great deal of time and hard work on a voluntary basis to get the scheme up and running. Despite working full-time in an extremely busy medical practice which involves many long days and late nights, she dedicates the majority of her spare time to the LCFR programme. The training is delivered jointly by Noelle and another co-founder of the programme.

Niamh Quann nominated Noelle for a Volunteer Ireland Award, saying “It is wonderful experience to work as part of a team with other local people, knowing that some day that teamwork may help to save someone’s life. I believe Noelle deserves recognition as she makes an incredible difference, not only to her patients' lives, but also to our community and those around her.”

Her colleagues at The Family First Medical Practice are also delighted to see her nominated. The awards are being presented at a ceremony in Dublin on this Thursday, December 5th.

At the monthly meeting of Lismore Town Council on Monday night, Cllr Orla Russell mentioned the nomination and was joined by her colleagues in extending congratulations to Dr Quann. Cllr Russell pointed out that the group now have 22 members who do a lot of hard work and have already responded to a number of callouts.
