St. Colman’s winner in Poetry Aloud 2013 competition

Not one, not two but three St Colman’s College students made it through to the finals of the Poetry Aloud Competition 2013 on Friday last in Dublin.

Not one, not two but three St Colman's College students made it through to the finals of the Poetry Aloud Competition 2013 on Friday last in Dublin.

The three came through 17 regional heats and two semi-finals to earn their places in the final from over 1,500 national entries.

Glanworth's Barry Pierce emerged as the overall winner of the senior category. His winning performance was a recitation of 'What is the Word' by Samuel Beckett. He followed up with a rendition of Lewis Carrol's 'Jabberwocky' after he was announced winner at the end of the show.

St Colman's other two finalists were Jack H O'Brien and Neilus Cotter who both gave commendable performances.

Each of the winners received a cash prize and book tokens were presented to the teachers from the winning schools.

The annual poetry speaking competition for Irish post primary scchools is organised by the National Library and Poetry Ireland. The finals are held in the National Library. It's the third year St Colman's College has been represented. The finals are available to view on YouTube under the title Poetry Aloud 2013.
