Serious concerns expressed over weir plans

Local activists, Helen White and William Hughes who are pushing to ‘Save the Weir’, have expressed their concerns with the timeline.

At the time that the planning application was submitted, An Bord Pleanála noted that the case was due to be decided by December 1, 2022. The proposed plans were lodged with the planning authority in early June, and now, over four months later, an update on the matter has yet to be seen.

Six submissions were made to An Bord Pleanála (ABP) in response to planning permission sought for the weir in Fermoy, and the council are now awaiting direction from ABP on the next steps. Most of the submissions expressed misgivings in one way or another with the plans.

The council’s proposal is for remedial works to the existing Fermoy Weir (a protected structure) and the construction of a new fish bypass on the River Blackwater. It will involve the removal of approximately 30 trees, excavation works …
