They say every cloud has a silver lining. The silver lining of Storm Darwin's clouds last week appears to be the boon created for tree surgeons. It was reported that there wasn't one to be got as they worked flat out removing hundreds of fallen trees around the region.

Locals reported having to wait several days to get local tree surgeons to come out to them, such was the demand. Cork County Council also employs contractors to cut up and remove fallen trees. They had some 60 fallen trees to contend with.

Fermoy Golf Club appears to have suffered the greatest loss, with a whopping 300 plus trees down. Their members rallied to remove them and clean up the course.

Many landowners equipped with chainsaws were able to remove fallen trees themselves but others without the equipment or the know-how had no choice but to wait for the professionals.

Such was the topical interest in the subject of fallen trees that Ladysbridge-based tree surgeon David Law was interviewed this week as he worked in the Rathcormac area for the RTE agri programme 'Ear to the Ground'.
