Tom O'Neill from Castletownroche will fulfill a boyhood ambition by taking his place at the start line in Cheltenham next week.
26-year-old, Tom, an electrical engineering student at CIT, is one of 12 jockeys selected to ride in the St Patrick's Derby Charity Flat Race on Thursday, 13th March. He also happens to be the nephew of legendary trainer, Jonjo O'Neill who operates out of the Jackdaw Castle yard in England.
Tom told The Avondhu that we was delighted to be selected for the 5th running of an event that has so far, raised £800,000 for Cancer Research UK.
"It's going to be a fantastic experience and I'm really looking forward to it. The excitement has really started to build and I've been receiving good wishes from so many people, I'm delighted to be part of it. I will be on board one of Jonjo's horses, Church Field, a 5-year-old gelding who is a useful sort," he said.
Alongside Tom at the starting line will be luminaries from the business and sporting world - among their number, Dubai based Sheikh Samir Mirdad, one of the world's richest men. Tom is taking it all in his stride and is thrilled to be able to assist such a great cause.
"Cancer research is very close to my heart and hopefully the race will raise substantial funds. It's a once in a lifetime chance for me and I intend making the most of it," Tom added.
