Following a successful fundraiser you usually have one happy organisation, however, the St Patrick's Eve Punch Up in Mitchelstown resulted in a host of clubs, associations and voluntary groups benefitting significantly.

The 'Punch Up' was the brainchild of Mitchelstown Rugby Club who are drawing up ambitious plans for their future development. Organisers put in a massive effort in the run up to the recent event and were rewarded with a bumper crowd. Individuals and groups associated with the 'Punch Up' were in Walsh's Bar, Mitchelstown on Friday night, April 4th to receive their cheques - the total amount presented was €9,000.

Cheques were handed over by club chairperson, Marie Meade and president, Owen Dawson. In her address, Marie congratulated all the boxers for their skill and bravery as well as acknowledging the contribution of her hardworking committee and everyone who helped make the night possible. Cork County Council and MC for the show, Maurice Walsh, were also thanked.

Part of the night involved viewing the DVD that captured the full programme of fights. For many of the participants it was their first time seeing themselves in action and reactions were interesting! While their dreams of ever being 'a contender' may not come to fruition, the boxers can take considerable pride in what they achieved for themselves and their organisations.

Finally, a word of thanks to the staff at Walsh's Bar for looking after everyone so well on the night.
