All systems go at Fermoy’s Palace Theatre and community centre

After a long haul in dealing with business while the flood relief works were on their doorstep, Fermoy Community Youth Centre are set to brush off the shackles these works imposed, and is set for a bright, new look future to accommodate those from near and far.

With the end in sight finally for the Fermoy flood relief works, the town's Community Youth Centre Palace Theatre is celebrating in style.

The past two years have been difficult for the centre and theatre because of the works, but they soldiered on and managed to continue to operate throughout. Now though, they are looking forward, not only to a construction-free Ashe Quay and parking facilities restored, but to the lovely promenade being provided that will complement the centre's beautiful riverside location.

In fact, manager Kieran Barry revealed recently that there's plans afoot to capitalise on the river Blackwater on their doorstep.

'MR ACCORDIAN MAN'

Meanwhile, they've not just one but two shows coming up to shake off the works and get their summer programme off to a flying start. The first is a lively night of dance, music and fun. Musician and singer Adrian Ryan is taking the social dance scene by storm at present, and it's something of a coup for the Palace Theatre to have landed him.

Adrian has appeared on various TV and radio shows. He tours as a one man show and recently launched a new album called 'Off to the Dance'. Adrian's single 'Mr. Accordian Man' has been receiving excellent airplay across the country and has spent four weeks at the top of the charts on South East Radio. He was part of Glór Tíre last year on TG4, reaching the final stages of the competition.

All proceeds from what promises to be a great night of dance and music will go towards the redevelopment of the children's dance studio at Fermoy Community Youth Centre. At €10, the tickets are great value.

The second big show is A Night at the Palace - a variety show in the best sense of the tradition, celebrating Fermoy's rich theatrical talent and the Palace Theatre's place in it. It'll feature performances from groups based in the community youth centre, such as Starstruck Studios, Fermoy Musical Society, Stephen Cullinane-O'Regan's School of Performing Arts, the Montfort School of Performing Arts and, as if that's not enough, a host of special guests will complete the bill.

The show will take place on Thursday and Friday, May 22nd and 23rd at the centre, at 7.30pm nightly. Tickets are just €12. The box office in Fermoy Community Youth Centre is the place to get tickets for both shows. It can be contacted on 025 32042 or by e-mail at info@fermoyyouthcentre.ie

LOOKING FORWARD

Meanwhile, all of the centre's many other activities continue apace. A brand new website has all the information on the centre and Palace Theatre, including details of ongoing and upcoming events, the box office, and how groups, clubs and other interested parties can book rooms for events, rehearsal space and the Palace Theatre.

The hoardings are down, the fencing will follow shortly and the heavy machinery will be gone from Ashe Quay, revealing Fermoy Community Youth Centre and the Palace Theatre as the fine community amenity that it is - right at the heart of the community.
