Sherlock welcomes successive drop in Live Register for North Cork area

The continued decrease in the Live Register figures recently announced, close to 10% in many areas locally, has been welcomed – a continued fall for 22 consecutive months.

Minister for Research & Innovation and Cork East TD, Seán Sherlock, has hailed the latest Live Register figures for the North Cork area, saying that they represent a confidence that is constantly growing. Currently there are 2,223 persons on the Live Register in the Fermoy area, with 2,361 persons on the Live Register in the Mallow area.

“The nearly 10% drop in the Live Register for the North Cork area of Fermoy is significant,” said Minister Sherlock. “It shows that the plan put in place by the Government – when we inherited a broken economy – is working. However, it is important not to become complacent. This Government is committed to creating more and more employment and the opening this month of the Local Enterprise Office in North Cork is yet another signal of that intent to get Ireland back on track. While the drop is welcome, these figures are still too high.”

There was a 10.25% drop in the East Cork area and an 8.84% drop in the Mallow area, while nationally the figures dropped 7% when compared with the same time last year.

“The Live Register has now fallen for 22 months in a row, a remarkable statistic by any standard,” said the Cork East TD. The results of these schemes introduced by Labour ministers, such as JobsPlus, already supporting 1,800 jobs, JobBridge and Springboard have been targeted to help those out of work for longest to access training, education, work placements and full-time employment. These figures show that these schemes are working,” the Minister concluded.
