‘The Chastitute’ by John B Keane, presented by The Shanowen Players, played to packed houses last month. Now they are back, by popular demand for one night in Rathcormac Hall on Friday, May 16th and proceeds of the night will go to the Diocesan Lourdes Fund to send assisted pilgrims to Lourdes.

This play, produced by the wonderful Valerie O’Leary, has everything you could want in a night’s entertainment, drama, romance, laughter and deep sadness. The set design by Oliver McCarthy is brilliant and the many scene changes have kept audiences enthralled.

The play tells the story of a single country man and his attempts to find a nice, sincere woman. He meets several possible partners and comes close to discovering romance but fate seem to hinder him in all his efforts. He has friends who try to help him but other insincere characters who mislead and deceive him.

The leading part of John Bosco McLaine is portrayed by Richard Lynch and his performance is acclaimed by all who have seen the play to date. Betty Cahill is excellent as Aunt Jane. James Ahearn is magnificent in his performance as Micky Molly, the matchmaker. Catriona Grady exceptional as Dora McMoo, Heather, Trudy and a fourth smaller walk on part. Marie Gubbins is fabulous as Norrie Macey and Suzanne. Elaine Keane, a newcomer to the stage fulfils the roles Julia and Juleen McCoon and Mags O’Connor is awesome as the formidable housekeeper Eva Kishock. The slick townie Silvester Brady is adeptly performed by Donal O’Leary and the Parish Priest, compassionately performed by Frank Buckley.

Newcomer Tadgh Kelleher deftly fills the dual roles of the gentle missioner and the townie, while the multi-talented John Power has the audience in awe as the cross missioner and highly entertaind with several live music performances. Daniel Lane plays the young John Bosco and expertly adapts to portray a number of characters throughout the play. Supporting roles by Kathleen O’Regan, Hugh Kelleher and Rita Kelleher are all exceptional.

Do not miss this opportunity to see this outstanding production of The Chastitute on May 16th in Rathcormac Hall at 8pm and simultaneously, support a very worthy cause in the Lourdes fund.
