Dublin Castle was alive with action last Friday, 2nd May, with Formula 1 style cars taking the limelight as they raced head to head in the national final of F1 In Schools technology challenge. Tech Week 2014 came to a finale with Colaiste an Chraoibhin’s Team Dolfin snatching the award for the fastest car in the Junior category.
An estimated 44,000 students took place in the inaugural Tech Week event. Primary and secondary school students have been challenged in the areas of science and technology, where competitions where held in areas of computer programming, environmental enterprises and Formula 1 race car design. The demand for talented engineers and designers in Ireland is expected to be huge in the coming years. This event is attempting to give students an insight into these careers, challenge them in aspects outside of the school curriculum and whetting their appetites for a future in these areas.
‘FASTEST CAR’
Six 2nd year students from Fermoy - James Quirke, Nathan Crowley, Naoimh Lomasney, Edel McCarthy, Nilton Bruno and Eoghan McCarthy - progressed through the regional events and represented their school proudly in the national finals. They were awarded the title of ‘Fastest Car’ in their category, while team Autolaunch from Co. Cavan won the overall title and will represent Ireland in Abu Dhabi on the world stage.
Team Dolfin would like to thank their sponsors ‘Fermoy Print and Design’ and ‘Kartworld Adventure Centre’ for their support and advice throughout the competition. Their time and generosity has given some of Colaiste an Chraoibhin’s future stars a chance to experience design engineering at the most modern level.
