A joint statement released this week by local business groups Fermoy Forum and the Mitchelstown Business Association, has been put forward regarding alternative route options for the Cork to Limerick motorway.
According to the statement, making ‘full use’ of the existing M8 from Cork to Mitchelstown and the construction of a new motorway from Mitchelstown to Limerick ‘should be fully explored’.
“The plan of connecting Limerick to Cork via motorway is a welcome progression in connecting the major cities in Ireland, however, the current proposal is not the right way to go about it,” the statement reads.
The business groups point out that only approximately 60km of new motorway would be required as opposed to the 90km if a route following the N20 is used.
“This would lead to significant reductions in cost and a much shorter delivery time.”
