A Fermoy journalist is one of a number of successful journalists who has been awarded funding from a prestigious media fund to look at the impact of war and violence in Western Sahara.

Graham Clifford from Fermoy will focus specifically on children in the Tindouf Refugee Camp, one of the oldest camps in the region. Graham’s feature article will be published in the Irish Independent and on Independent.ie.

The fund is run by Irish Aid, the Government’s programme of assistance to developing countries. The Simon Cumbers Media Fund, which has provided the support for this project, was established by Irish Aid in memory of Irish journalist Simon Cumbers, who was killed in Saudi Arabia while working with the BBC in 2004.

Congratulating Graham, Minister for North-South Cooperation, Trade Promotion and Development, Sean Sherlock, TD said: "With successful applicants like Graham travelling to developing countries and sharing the stories of the people they meet, the Irish public has the opportunity to better understand the challenges facing communities in those countries and the very significant progress which is being made. I wish Graham and all of the journalists every success with their projects.”
