A 28 year-old Dublin man was killed in a crash on the M8 motorway near Mitchelstown shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday.

His Volkswagen Golf car was in a collision with a four-wheel-drive which it is understood was travelling along the northbound lanes of the motorway in the wrong direction between junctions 13 and 14. The man died at the scene while his female passenger, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Cork University Hospital.

It is thought the driver of the four-wheel-drive, a woman in her early 70’s and from the Kildorrery area, may have taken a wrong exit off a roundabout. Frantic efforts to warn her by drivers on the southbound carriageway failed. Both carriageways of the M8 were closed for a time to facilitate the landing of an Aer Corps helicopter, which airlifted the woman to CUH.

Michael Carolan, Chief Fire Officer at Mitchelstown Fire Station told The Avondhu they responded to the crash with two units, accompanied by two further units from Fermoy Fire Station.

They arrived at the scene at 2.45pm and remained there until 4.15pm. Also present at the scene were a number of HSE ambulances, advanced paramedics and a trauma team from CUH.

Mr Carolan says the lady travelling in the car in which the fatality occurred, suffered a number of fractures and both casualties are being treated for internal injuries.

Diversions were in place at junction 14 near Moorepark to junction 13 at Gortnahown which meant traffic was heavy on the old N8 for a number of hours. The northbound lane was closed until late on Tuesday night for a technical examination.
