Sightsavers are set to benefit from a fundraising vintage tea, coffee morning and cake sale to be held in Ballyduff Upper on September 7th. Photo: iStock

A vintage tea and coffee morning and cake sale will be held in the library, Ballyduff Upper on Sunday, September 7^th after 11am Mass, with Sightsavers the beneficiaries.

Sightsavers is a international organisation which helps to prevent river blindness and other eye disorders. River blindness is caused by flies that thrive in fast flowing rivers, mostly in underdeveloped countries. The disease robs people of their sight and causes unbearable itching. The good news is that it is completely preventable - one mectizan treatment can protect a person against river blindness for a whole year.

This mectizan treatment has been donated free by pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. (M.S.D.), but has to be distributed across whole communities, many in very remote areas with 120 million people at risk. Sightsavers are also trying to focus on the huge amount of cataracts and trachoma operations needed, especially in many African countries.
