Barrack Hill, Fermoy set for some festive cheer

Those with businesses and residences on Barrack Hill, Fermoy are dreaming of a colourful, bright Christmas, with an initiative underway to have the street lit for the festive season, for the first time.

Fermoy does its best every year to ensure the town centre looks well for the festive season. For practical reasons, not every street can be lit up, however, it's often been commented on that Oliver Plunkett Hill (Barrack Hill) misses out when it comes to Christmas lights.

Adopting the adage that it's better to light a candle than curse the darkness, residents and businesses of this important thoroughfare are moblising themselves to illuminate a route that stretches from Allen's Walk to Shinnick's supermarket. This is a 'citizens' initiative' and while it would be great if a generous benefactor stepped in to pick up the tab (estimated to be €3,000), locals are determined to come up with the necessary cash in good time for the holiday season.

FUNDRAISERS PLANNED

Those behind the venture are confident that the goodwill exists to make the project a success and they've lost no time in putting together a number of fundraisers - first up is a coffee morning in The Long Bar on Saturday, 18th October from 10.30am, followed by a table quiz in Fermoy Pitch & Putt Club on Thursday, 23rd October and a raffle scheduled for Clancy's Bar on Sunday 2nd November.

There's also a Facebook appeal and of course any individual or business who might like to make a donation is more than welcome to do so, further information from 025-32673 and 087-6996727. If everything falls into place, Barrack Hill will shimmer and glimmer like never before this Christmas.
