On Saturday, October 4th we headed up to Kildorrery to play Mitchelstown in the U16 North Cork final. When these 2 teams meet you are always guaranteed a full game of passion, drama and an abundance of skill. They did not disappoint us this time either.
Mitchelstown started the game in a whirlwind fashion and had the ball in our net twice in the opening 6 minutes. We had a point on the board after 8 minutes to open our account and we quickly tacked on 2 more and true to Mitchelstown form their reply swift to our period of dominance and scored a point of their own. As the half wore on Glanworth were firing on all cylinders and scored a goal and 2 points to Mitchelstown’s 1 point. As the half-time whistle was sounded it was level pegging Glanworth 1-5 Mitchelstown 2-2.
Having to face the elements of a strong wind and heavy showers it was Glanworth who were quickly out of the blocks and hit Mitchelstown with 2 quick fire goals. This did not deter the town girls and they came back to score a goal of their own. The game was now in the melting pot but it was the Glanworth girls who raised their game to a higher level to outscore their opponents in the last 10 minutes by 2-3 to 0-1. The score at the final whistle was Glanworth 5-8 Mitchelstown 3-3.
After the game referee, Justin Murphy, presented the trophy to Sarah Hannon, captain of the victorious Glanworth team, amid jubilant scenes.
Well done to all the panel members who played their part throughout the year. A special thanks to our 2 youngest players who came to our cause when the need was at its greatest. Thanks to Mitchelstown who played the game in a sporting manner and to Kildorrery for hosting the game.
