Ten students from Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown received a variety of Pope John Paul II awards at a recently held ceremony in Mallow. Bishop William Crean delivered the opening address to a packed audience and presented the medals and certificates to each student.
Niamh Palmer, a leaving cert student at Presentation, was the first ever student from the Diocese of Cloyne to receive the Papal Cross. Last year Niamh achieved the Gold award. She continued her work at parish and community level throughout the past year and on the night of the award ceremony she spoke about her experience and the amazing faith journey she has embarked on since Transition Year. Niamh also presented a power point presentation of the various activities she was part of for the year. Her words were inspirational and she was highly praised for her commitment throughout the year by the co-ordinator of the Cloyne awards, Bernadette O'Connor.
Involvement in the John Paul II awards involves an ongoing commitment over a period of one to two years at both parish and community level. It takes huge dedication and its an amazing achievement to receive an award. In the spirit of Nano Nagle, the foundress of the Presentation Order, the students at Presentation are encouraged to go one step beyond and their involvement in this award certainly affords them the opportunity to do just that.
Four students, Annette O'Donnell, Maeve Lewis, Laura Guerin and Emily McMillan received gold medals, Sarah White received silver and Kelly Boland, Rebecca O'Regan and Megan Fitzgerald received bronze. They were among sixty other senior cycle students from across the Diocese of Cloyne to receive an award.
A special word of thanks to Canon Michael Fitzgerald PP, Mitchelstown Parish for sponsoring the students participation in this award.
