Planning decisions on two proposed multi-million euro motorway service station off the M8 near Fermoy and Mitchelstown are expected early next week. The applications were made by JR Oronoco Ltd and Applegreen Service Areas Ltd respectively.

At junction 14 along the M8, at Gortore, Moorepark West, Fermoy, JR Oronoco Ltd has applied for approval to construct a shop/restaurant building with drive through facility, forecourt and canopy, fuel facilities for heavy commercial vehicles, picnic and external seating/amenity area and footpaths, as well as amendments to the existing entrance serving the Teagasc facility at Moorepark.

This is the second application made by the company for such a development. Despite being approved by Cork County Council in late 2013, the decision was overturned by An Bord Pleanála earlier this year following six appeals. The decision, which if approved would bring both short and long-term employment to the area in both the construction and retail areas, is expected on Monday next, January 12.

At junction 13 along the M8, near Gortnahown, Mitchelstown, Applegreen Service Areas Ltd have also made a new application for a large-scale service station. Included in the application is a four-pump car/van forecourt and a two-pump HGV forecourt, eat-in/take-out café/restaurants, convenience shop, public toilets, parking for 124 cars and an on-site waste water treatment system.

As with the initial application made by JR Oronoco Ltd, the first application by Applegreen Service Areas Ltd was refused following a number of appeals An Bord Pleanála in October, 2013. A decision of the application is due on Wednesday, January 14.
