Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) held the final of its 11th annual Schools Robot Competition in Devere Hall, UCC on Wednesday, February 11th.

The competition is for Second Year school students and is undertaken in conjunction with University College Cork (UCC), Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), Tyndall National Institute, and the support of CEIA member companies.

A key aspect of the initiative is that engineers, researchers and technologists from these institutes provide mentor support for the teams and this is an important opportunity to give the students an insight into potential careers in the industry.

Cork is home to many Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies who provide challenging careers for people interested in driving technological change and this competition focuses on students who will become the engineers to grow and develop these companies. Electrical & Electronic Engineering courses are offered in Cork at UCC and CIT.

The CEIA represents High Tech companies in the Cork region working in accord with the Industrial Development Agency (IDA), Enterprise Ireland, the Cork Education & Training Board, (formerly FÁS), the Cork Institute of Technology and University College Cork, to ensure a sophisticated technological infrastructure is in place to enable the industry to grow and prosper.

The organisation was founded in 1984 by a number of CEOs, primarily focused on lobbying improvement of the infrastructure of the region and to nurture growth. It has achieved major success since inception, and can be considered the significant Association representing the ICT sector in the Southern region of Ireland.

The CEIA currently comprises 57 members, including the 5 statutory members, CIT, EI, CETB, IDA and UCC. Membership is split evenly between FDI, (Multinationals) and indigenous industry.
