“When I started off I was the youngest at the station, now I’m the oldest” – the words of popular fireman, Billy Bane, whose 46 year relationship with Fermoy Fire Brigade is set to end shortly.
The Bane family have had a long association with the fire service and the insistence of a grand uncle that the tradition continue, kickstarted Billy’s career.
“It was my grand uncle Davy Bane, who came up with the idea. He was retiring from the service and was anxious that a member of the Bane family keep the connection going, that’s where it started.
