The HSE South West Migraine Clinic at Cork University Hospital marked its 25th birthday on Friday last, October 31.
Established within the Department of Neurology at CUH in September 2000, the event celebrated the 25 years of invaluable support offered by the team. As well as an address from the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, the event also heard from experts on the clinic’s impact over the last 25 years.
Migraine is the commonest neurological disorder, affecting 10-12% of the population and is 3 times more common in women. It is the 2nd leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide, according to the WHO, and is the leading cause of disability in women under the age of 50 years.
The Taoiseach congratulated the team ‘for their fantastic work in supporting people suffering from what is the most common neurological disorder’.
Since the clinic opened in 2000, Dr Eddie O’Sullivan has been the clinical director and Ethna Mitten the clinical nurse specialist in migraine. To date, the clinic has treated over 8,000 patients, allowing them access to the most up-to-date care.
