McCarthy Insurance Group has welcomed the publication of a Government report aimed at addressing the rising cost of motor insurance in Ireland.

The Cost of Insurance Working Group, established by Minister Eoghan Murphy, made 33 recommendations in their report to bring about a decrease in the cost of motor insurance for drivers.

A major clampdown by gardaí on uninsured drivers will be implemented as part of the report’s recommendations, while a new database is to be created to provide details of all drivers, their insurance company and their car’s registration.

Managing Director at McCarthy Insurance Group Paul Kavanagh, welcomed the report but stressed that the recommendations must be implemented if there is to be a reduction in insurance costs.

“We at McCarthy Insurance Group welcome the report, and indeed, if implemented will reduce costs, but only when implemented. There needs to be immediate action, not talking. Enforcement is key to the success of this report,” he said.

Presently there are about 150,000 drivers on the roads without insurance. Insurance costs in Ireland have risen by nearly 70 per cent in the past three years.
