A young jockey from Lismore was the toast of the town in recent days after winning a major race in Aintree last week.
Dean Pratt won the Novice Hurdle at Doncaster (1-3-13) on Cockney Sparrow. The race, for conditional jockeys and amateur riders, saw Dean keep the four-year-old horse towards the rear of the field for much of the race before gradually weaving him up through the contenders, to put him out front, where horse and jockey gave it their all to record an exciting six-length victory.
Dean's uncle, Tallow councillor and Co Waterford deputy mayor John Pratt, was delighted to be in Aintree to witness his nephew's big win.
Dean has been described by Roy Waterhouse Steeplechasing as the 'Jockey to Watch' for the 2012/'13 season. The young jockey joined the John Quinn stable in Malton in early 2010. His first win came in September 2011. After some further wins came his next best before Aintree last week. The previous race saw Dean matched with the handicap hurdler Palawi in Newcastle in February where he won the competitive Class 2 race at the Eider Chase meeting.
