‘Diadhuit’ – providing light in the darkness
As reported recently by The Avondhu, for the second Christmas now, 13 people promised houses in Crann Ard in Fermoy are unable to move in. There was some light at the end of the tunnel for them this week though with the news that Cork County Council hopes to soon commence the works in the estate that are preventing them from moving in.
Manager of the Northern Division of the county council Moira Murrell told councillors that while it is a complex issue, her hope is that works will commence in the new year.
Speaking at the Northern Area Committee meeting in Mallow in response to a motion by Cllr Frank O'Flynn, the manager said they've been keeping the pressure on, but that the only commitment she could relay is that they hope work will start in the new year.
Outlining the plight of the families, Cllr O'Flynn said that some of them are spending money on rent and they still don't know where they stand with the houses they were promised. They were all very patient to be putting up with the situation for so long, he noted.
Cllr Noel McCarthy, who has long been advocating for the people promised houses, said he was baffled by the council's response, as they were allocated the houses over 13 months ago and they are still in the same position they were in then.
"We must learn lessons from this, this must never happen again," he stressed. "Something must be done, these people can't be left in limbo."
Cllr Kevin O'Keeffe recommended that, as a gesture of goodwill, Munster NABCO, who allocated the houses, subsidise the rent people are paying while they wait to move in.
